Spotlight: Settler Colonialism and Survivance – Teaching 19-20th Century Dakota History in KS3

Today’s spotlight Unit Path was developed by Alex Ford (Leeds Trinity), Chris Jacques (Horsforth School) and Ross Miles (Horsforth School). You can find the full Unit Path and the associated resources online HERE.

The unit began life as a resource designed to help schools rebalance their teaching of GCSE American West units but was developed into a specific unit exploring Indigenous presence during Key Stage 3. During the unit pupils are asked to consider the question: What story should we tell about Zitkala-Sa? The unit then asks them to consider why and how the Dakota activist Zitkala-Sa is significant, despite being erased from most histories of the United States.
